Be Careful What you Wish for! by Cheryl Colley

If you think you know all there is to know about the musical Little Shop of Horrors, perhaps you might need to think again. The Court Theatre’s summer revival of Little Shop of Horrors gives a fresh take to this genially gruesome classic. The shop itself has morphed into a van – a shop on wheels – something very familiar to Christchurch citizens so used to pop-up stores and container malls.

Never fear though – the beloved story of hapless florist shop worker Seymour and his blood-thirsty singing plant Audrey II will be brought to life with all the glorious technicolor and razzamatazz of costumes, set and killer performances we expect from The Court Theatre’s musical productions.

The show’s music, composed in the style of early 1960s rock and roll and doo-wop includes a number of hits - "Somewhere That's Green", “Feed me” and "Suddenly, Seymour" – all performed by The Court’s deluxe cast.

Who is in that cast? It’s a mix of familiar and new faces. Playing Orin, the dentist with a dark side is The Court’s household name – Roy Snow. This will be Roy’s third show with The Court this year, including his unforgettable appearance in Ladies Night. Another familiar face, Rutene Spooner, will bring Seymour - the less than courageous hero whom we can’t help but root for - to life. Playing the hopeless romantic and secret love of Seymour is Monique Clementson as Audrey, while the amazing Brady Peeti will be creating the larger-than-life presence that is Audrey II. Do watch out for Audrey II – this carnivorous succulent may not be quite what you expect.

One of the most successful musicals of all time, Little Shop of Horrors is disarmingly funny, clever and tuneful. You won’t want to miss this one! On at The Court Theatre from 20 November 2021 – 1 January 2022.

Just remember... Don’t feed the plants!
