WHY SAYING “YES, YES, YES”, IS NOT AS SIMPLE AS IT SOUNDS by Dan Pengelly

In May we will host a wee show that you most likely don’t know we have on or most likely haven’t even heard the name of.

Yes Yes Yes, made by Eleanor Bishop and Karin McCracken is all about consent.

Karin performs the show solo and does it in conversation with the audience. Speaking to them directly and inviting them to anonymously text their answers and stories to the moderator, who then displays them on the stage behind Karin. It is made for high school students to facilitate conversations around consent. What consent is, what does it sound like, how can they as young people give it, deny it and be encouraged to support conversations around it.

We started investigating it coming here last year with Eleanor and Karin’s production company. Little did we know that recent events in Christchurch between certain schools would blow up. Bringing this very topic into the light showing that our young people need better education around consent, emotional intelligence and communication. As a theatre company, we do not only offer entertainment, but we also wish to facilitate stories around what life is like in our communities and to challenge and provoke discussion and learning in our communities. We happily are preparing for nearly 1000 high school students to come here and engage with this show and this topic in a safe and supported way. This play is a great illustration of the public value of The Court Theatre.

We will have several performances between the 18-20 May here at The Court Theatre, quietly happening out of sight of the public. Yes Yes Yes

But I thought as Friends of the Court, you may like to know some of the various things this company is able to help within Canterbury thanks to your support and generosity.
