OUR YEAR SO FAR by Barbara George, CE

What a great year we’ve been having … Jersey Boys was a sold-out success; followed by Winding Up – another sold-out season; then Things I Know To Be True had many sold-out performances (and certainly we were pleased with the number of people through the doors); and now we are in full swing with Ladies Night – and what a night! Now if you haven’t been along to a show so far this year, please move The Court Theatre to the top of your bucket list and come and have some fun.

I have my own story about Ladies Night. I went to primary school with one of the playwrights. Over the years I have read books by Anthony McCarten, and fodder for his stories were our childhood. Ladies Night has been the most often produced play in New Zealand theatre history.

Its been such a great year for us so far, that the pressure is really on Artistic Director Dan Pengelly and his team to come up with next year’s programme. Our plan is to launch the season around 1 September, so sorry, a bit longer to wait to hear the great lineup of work.

Our Court Theatre team continues to work hard to produce excellent, authentic productions. A shout out to our Programmes Manager Rachel Tully who for the past six years has led our education and outreach programme – reaching approximately 18,000 learners each year – from primary school to adults. Rachel is leaving us in May to move to Marlborough with her husband – our loss is definitely their gain. We will miss her, but suspect we will see her from time to time.

And finally from me, a big thank you to Annie Bonifant, Cheryl Colley, Judy Ashton, and the rest of the Committee who put together the most remarkable 50th Anniversary celebrations. You will hear from each of these excellent contributors in this edition of Court Cues. We are lucky to have these talented leaders in our corner. Just one last thing – and certainly not the least – a huge thank you to Tina Duncan who made the most amazing cake to celebrate our 50th.
