From the Chair - October 2020

Updated: Oct 15, 2020

Spring is here and brings with it a wonderful sense of optimism and new life. This new life and optimism is also happening here at The Court. The Meridian Energy 2021 Season is about to be launched with the programme of shows ahead.

We have now celebrated the first show back in the auditorium and are in the midst of planning for the big summer musical in November. All fingers and toes are crossed for the status quo. The Supporters also have exciting events planned for you; a Christmas lunch with guest Richard Marrett, dinner with Mark Hadlow and a rock 'n' roll class to get you bopping before Jersey Boys.

I have been involved lately in the planning of the 50th anniversary of The Court which we will celebrate with great theatrical style in April next year. This celebration ties in with the launch of our new name, “Friends of The Court.” It is admirable that we have been a producing theatre for half a century, continuing with the status of the most successful theatre in New Zealand.

Time to say goodbye

I have had the privilege of working with Jane Huria and Stephanie Marsden on the Board of Trustees for the last seven years and now their terms have come to an end. We recently farewelled them at a special dinner. Jane’s background in governance and her links with Ngāi Tahu have been invaluable to the Board for the last ten years, helping us on the complex jouneys we have navigated. Establishing the theatre in The Shed after the earthquakes and now in the sign off of the new build in the city. Stephanie started with the Board in 2012 and has made a major contribution with her wisdom and legal skills. Both Jane and Stephanie have brought a sense of real commitment and love for the theatre and have provided laughter alongside wise council. They will be greatly missed.

Wishing you all the best,

Annie Bonifant
